Looking at virtualization? Perhaps what you need is separation? Many development organizations are considering or deploying virtualization using a hypervisor as a component in their system design. A hypervisor provides a mechanism to run one or multiple operating systems on top of an underlying execution environment providing time and memory management. The main driver is far too often in need of a sandbox environment allowing different applications to execute in separate operating systems to make sure they can't affect each other. Virtualization may very well be a legitimate design choice, however it may also impose a considerable overhead on the system if the only need is separation. A separation operating system can solve this in a simple way without the massive overhead of guest operating systems allowing one application to be completely separated in both time and memory. INTEGRITY is such a separation OS that can help you isolate functions and improve the overall software quality and at the same time be extended to deploy full virtualization as an integrated part of the separation technology. This presentation will show the core features of a separation kernel and give examples where it can provide huge added value such as for functional safety, security or general quality. Presenter: Anthony Webb, Green Hills Software Tony has been an FAE with Green Hills Software since 2008 and specialises in safe and secure embedded applications, particularly the use of INTEGRITY RTOS, hypervisors and associated C and C++ development tools. Tony has worked in various embedded software roles since graduating from Liverpool University in 1997. He has experience developing satellite, airborne and ground based embedded systems across the military and civilian sectors, including navigation, telecommunications and radar systems.

Embedded Software Development - The Third Way Tools are critical to successful embedded software development. With very tight time-to-market constraints and limited system resources, embedded software engineers face formidable challenges. To date, the options have been to purchase high quality, but expensive, specialist tools or obtain less optimal open source products and spend time tuning them for the project requirements. There is a third way: obtain fully optimized open source tools, augmented with additional embedded-specific tools, along with full support, from an experienced specialist supplier. In this session, the embedded software tools landscape will be reviewed in detail, highlighting the critical requirements that facilitate timely delivery of optimal code, and the Mentor Embedded Sourcery toolchain will be outlined. Presenter: Colin Walls, Mentor Graphics Colin Walls has over twenty-five years experience in the electronics industry, largely dedicated to embedded software. A frequent presenter at conferences and seminars and author of numerous technical articles and two books on embedded software, Colin is an embedded software technologist with Mentor Embedded [the Mentor Graphics Embedded Software Division], and is based in the UK. His regular blog is located at: http://blogs.mentor.com/colinwalls |
